BFA Thesis shows

This week was the second half of the BFA thesis shows.  No graphic designers were in this show since they all went last week.  I do think it is horrible for that one program to try and take over a whole show since it is not only about them.  There are many programs invovled within these shows and one should not think more of itself than others.  Maybe in the furture there should be three weeks of shows for BFA's.  This should happen next year because there will be an overflow of graduates due to how many students entered a program at once.  I know that at least within the metal department there will be 6 next semester and 7 the semester following.  Who knows what the other programs look like.

As far as the shows go, I wasn't too impressed with some of the graphic design from last week.  This could be a bias based on the program mentioned above.  With most of the work I could tell that a lot of work was included but some seemed as though they could have been thrown together over a weekend.  I almost feel that the graphic design department could be more of a product design department.

The two ceramicists in the show stood out the most.  I loved their work and I could tell how much time had been put into the project.  Each had very nice coesive work.  The painter had very interesting work.  I was drawn strongly to her pieces because of the inclusion of other materials that made the canvas 3D.  Texture can work very well if done right and I believe that she was able to pull this off.  Amazing was the use of egg shells becuase of how delicate they can be, but the piece looked strong and solid.

Anyway, the show this week had a lot going on for it.  In each direction I looked I was intrigued and wanted to move around the whole space.  The opening was hectic and I did not have the time to really take in all of the work.  I do know that I saw some amazing paintings, with interesting use of canvas and frames.  There was video in use, though I wasn't sure what I was looking at and just walked away.

Alex Hibbs had his show tonight and I completly loved his set up.  It was a nice and freshing way to see the work displayed.  He had his shoes standing ontop of rods of steel rather then sitting on pedastools.  I feel that this allowed for the work to be seen more fully.
Misato I. had her show as well and I also liked her display.  Putting the alphabet in gave her work the context I felt it needed.  Some of the connections she used were funny and each worked well.  Her work was clear and a lot of fun to see.
Ashley B.  Her work seemed to deal with some sort of skin mutation or diesease.  I am curious about how she decided to use round grid like shapes as a base.  I also wonder how these pieces stuck to her skin like on her card.  I do like the idea of playing with the skin of the body and trying to imitate or use it.

All I have stated a quick memories I had of the shows and do not go into very deep detail.
